Hi Eric There is a problem with Bjorn Jarnsida just as there is with Aslaug Sigurdsdotter. There were more than one individual in Scandinavian history with these names and they have become confused with each other. The Bjorn you have identified is called by some Bjorn Jarnsida and is the same as that one who raided in Normandy in 760 AD. There is another, earlier Bjorn Jarnsida who is the the uncle/great uncle of Ragnar Lodbrok, as well as a later younger Bjorn Jarnsida who died in in the 12th century...

The Annales Bertiniani and the Chronicon Fontanellense tell of a Viking leader named Berno who pillaged on the Seine in the 850s, and c. 1070, William of Jumièges referred to him as Bier Costae ferreae (Ironside) who was Lotbroci regis filio (son of king Lodbrok). Thus causing centuries of conflicting genealogy where in Bjorn Jarnsida was confused with both earlier Bjorns. Almoustine 27 aug 2009 17:48 (EEST)
