Historians have for decades attributed to Rurik some brothers named Sineus and Truvor. Unfortunately these names do not bear any resemblance to Rosomani, Ywar, or Vendish names and are likely misinterpretations of Scandinavian terms wherein Rurik arrived from Vendland with "sinhus" (his household) and "trosvanner" (sworn liegemen). They set sail from Roselagen (The Upsalan archepelago) and the contingency consisted of native Svear of Upsala and Rosamani (Geatish Continentals).

His historical personality is generally disputed. It is however generally accepted that one or more persons like Rurik have existed. He is said to be a Viking leader that built a fortess in 862, just south of Novgorod. Archeological exploration indicates that Ruriks settlement must be at least a century older. The pottery found there is related to Jutland pottery of that time, so a strong Viking connection is clear. One theory identifies Rurik as Rorik of Dorestad, a Danish Viking leader that ravaged the southern North Sea and was established as a fuedal lord in Dorestad (an important trading settlement on the Rhine river in then-Friesland).
