In the Summer of 1745, Percival Clay was sentenced to transportation (to Virginia) for the crime of stealing in Kirk Ella, Hull, Yorkshire. Percival appears to have named a son "Chalender," and so it appears he is in some way descended from the Chalender family of Yorkshire, as well as from the Clay family.

In 1746, he ran away from his master, Francis Brown, stealing some clothing and basic other possessions. The few records that exist suggest he was trained as a blacksmith, and that he worked his way around Virginia and North Carolina in the years before the American Revolution. It would appear he was fairly active in buying and selling land in North Carolina, with his primary base of operations eventually being Duplin County (later Sampson County), North Carolina. He appears to have married a woman named Sarah and to have had at least four children: Percival Clay, Jr., David Clay, Chalender Clay, and Sarah Clay. Between 1780 and 1795 the entire family removed to Georgia, settling in Warren, Washington, and Wilkinson Counties (all of which are near each other).

Percival appears to have died sometime before 1803, by which time his widow, Sarah, appears to have conveyed their Warren County land to a third party, which party then sold it on to somebody else.
