1783, il commença son service militaire comme soldat du régiment d'infanterie d'Astrakhan, stationné aux alentours de Kizliar.
1787, il reçut le grade d'enseigne (Прапорщик, 14e rang dans la table des rangs, voir en russe la Table des rangs) sous le règne de l'impératrice Catherine II ou Ekaterina II Alexeïevna.
1787-1791, il servit dans le régiment d'infanterie du Caucase et il participa à la guerre russo-turque.
1792-1794, il participa aux campagnes polonaises.
1798, il fut promu colonel (Полковник, 6e rang dans la table des rangs) sous le règne de l'empereur Pavel I Petrovitch.
1799, il fut promu général de division (Генерал-майор, 4e rang dans la table des rangs).
1805-1807, il participa à la guerre contre Napoléon ; dans la bataille d'Hollabrunn, il assura l'arrière-garde du général Mikhaïl Illarionovitch Koutouzov.
1805, il fut promu lieutenant-général (Генерал-лейтенант, 3e rang dans la table des rangs, voir en russe la Table des rangs) sous le règne de l'empereur Alexandre I Pavlovitch.
1806-1807, il commanda de nouveau l'arrière-garde de l'armée russe et il se distingua lors des batailles d'Eylau et de Friedland.
1808, dans la guerre de Finlande, il commanda la 21e division d'infanterie.
1809, il dirigea l'expédition d'Åland, ses troupes occupèrent les îles Åland et il fut promu général d'infanterie (Генерал от инфантерии, 2e rang dans la table des rangs).
1809-1810, dans la guerre russo-turque, avec ses troupes, il captura la forteresse de Măcin.
1812, à la bataille de la Moskova ou bataille de Borodino, il fut blessé à la jambe et Alexandre Dmitrievitch Olsoufiev le transporta hors du champ de bataille.
1812, 17 jours après sa blessure, il mourut d'une septicémie chez Boris Andreïevitch Golitsyne sur le domaine de Sima près d'Iouriev-Polski du gouvernement de Vladimir de l'Empire russe.
