Alexander or "Sandy" as he was called by some of his employees was a total abstainer from alcohol. Source: Alexander Mackenzie:Clear Grit p.18
Alexander was contracted to set the huge stones that were to form the sides of the lock of the Beauharnois canal. While working on this project a huge stone block weighing over a ton, fell on his leg. The blow was cushioned by the bed of soft cement, however the damage was severe and despite the intense pain, he did not utter a cry. It was several weeks before he could walk and the leg never regained its former strength. He then became a foreman on the Welland Canal project. Source: Alexander Mackenzie:Clear Grit p.21
Alexander built the first Bank of Upper Canada in Port Sarnia as well as the courthouse and gaol in Chatham and Sandwich, the county buildings when Port Sarnia became the seat of Lambton County. Source: Alexander Mackenzie:Clear Grit by Dale Thomson p.25
