John Jacob Besser was a minister to England in the 16th century. He was a resident of Heidelberg, Germany. He married Susannah McKean Tinsley Besser ‎‎‎(b. 11/01/1780 London, England, d. 06/1860 in Huntsville, Texas: see 1860 census, micro copy 653 , roll 1307, Houston Public Library)‎‎‎. They moved to Northcumberland, Pennsylvania where they had their own child, John Slater Besser ‎‎‎(b. 08/03/1802 Northcumberland, PA, d. 1893 Huntsville, TX)‎‎‎. John Slater Besser is buried in Oakwood Cemetary with a marker from the State of Texas Historical Commission. The New Handbook of Texas, volume 1, pub. by the TX State Historical Assoc, 1996.,pg 507 has an article about his accomplishments and his contributions to Texas. John Slater Besser was a resident of Lincoln County Missouri where he was elected a justice of the county court and served in the state militia as a general. He moved near Huntsville, Texas in 1849. He built the first jail in Montgomery Co, Tx and was the first purchasing agent for the Tx State Penitenitary in Huntsville, Tx. Gen. John Slater Besser was married four times, but only had children with his first wife, Julia Luisa Wade Hampton. They met in Louisville, Kentucky and were married in Lincoln County, Troy, Missouri on 06-19-1835. A family bible has that Julia Hampton was born 02/18/1812 in Kentucky, other records reflect 02/11/1811. She died 05/13/1845 and is buried in the Besser Family cemetary about 2 miles east of New Waverly, Tx. John Slater Besser and Julia Luisa Wade Hampton had seven children: James Besser b. Lincoln Co. Family lineage continues with Charles Thomas Besser and Louisa Elyette Wainwright. They were married in Enterprise, Clark County, Mississippi, on the 13th of May, 1860. Louisa Elyett Wainwright was the daughter of J. V. Wainwright ‎‎‎(b. 1811, Louisiana)‎‎‎ and wife Martha ‎‎‎(b. 1814)‎‎‎.
