USA After 1874 when her father Patrick died "Kate" Catherine Coll found work in the household of Thomas Atkinson, landowner and the man somesay is the father of Eamon de Valera. According to most accounts Catherine arrived in New York aboard the SS Nevada on Oct 2, 1879 aged 22 years as passenger number 130. At the time of Catherine's death she was the widow of Charles E. Wheelright, and English immigrant. According to the 1900 U.S. census Catherine Wheelwright immigrated to the US in 1876 and had been living there for 24 years. An obit published in NY Herald on June 13, 1932 states 'In 1876she came to the US and entered a training school for nurses in NYC' The NY Times and Rochester Times-Union also gave her arrival as as 'immigant girl in 1876'. Two leading Irish-American newspapers, the Irish World and the Gaelic-American in their obits stated that Catheine Coll arrived in the US in 1876. The Times of London reported her entry to the US as 1879 as did the 1910 US census. The 1880 US census has Catherine Coll living at 98 Lawerence St in Brooklyn. Her age is 22 working as a domestic servant in the household of Francis and Martha Quackenbush Giraud. (a Vaudevillian; stage name of Frank Girard.) Some sources say that Kate met Vivian Juan de Valera at the Giraud home, that de Valera being an artist found himself a welcome guest in that house.Other accounts say that de Valera met Coll while she was working in Greenville, NJ again as a domestic. Greenville/Jersey City is generally accepted as the place of thier marriage. Birth Certificate read Oct 14, 1882. "George De Valero", Nursery and Child's Hospital (N&CH)... there was a "corrected" birth certificate later. According to one account, de Valera's father siad that hisson's name was 'Edward', but because of his Spanish accent it was mistaken for 'George' and written as such on the original birth certificate. Mothers Hospital Registration read: Date: 1882 Oct 13; Name Mrs. Katre De Valero; Nation; Irish; Name of Child; Unborn' Age 24 years; Reference: Mrs. Abraham, 61 East 41 st ; Fesidence of Parents ; Brother, Edward Coll, Rahway, NJ. Jennie Crager Abrahams was the wife of Samuel (aka Solomon) Abrahams, a Russian-born 'Segar" dealer. They are listed in the NY City Directory at 61 E 41 st. After the initial shock of her son Edward's arrest in 1916, Kate seemed to become proud of him. She attended meetings of the American association for the Recognition of the Irish Republic. In 1922 she was chosen honarary president of Cumann na mBan. When de Valera rejected the treaty with Britain his mother was quoted in the press "It was exactly what I thought he would do. Had he chosen any other course he would have disappointed not only me, but millions of others in the world who are of Irish birth, exraction or sympathy". In a letter to President Calvin Coolidge dated Sept 22, 1923, Mrs Wheelwright asked for the president's intervention for the release of her son. Deblera had been arested during the Civil War. Kate wrote: "He had done no wrong only loved Ireland... I appeal as mother who loves her son and knows no rest or peace while my beloved child is imprisoned in a lonely cell". On Dec 28, 1927 Charles Wheelwright died at the age of 70, leaving Kate a widow. On June 12, 1932 Cathereine T. Wheelwright died at her home at 18 Brighton st, Rochester.
